MAORIS HELP
THE PATRIOTIC FUNDS FUNCTIONS IN CAMBRIDGE The Cambridge patriotic funds will benefit by about £ls, as a result of the efforts of the Maoris of the district on Saturday. In the afternoon a football match was played between the Pukemoremore Maoris and a team of men from the hydro-electric works at Karapiro, and a concert and dance was held in the Town Hall at night. The Maoris won the football match by G points to 3. The evening function was well arranged with Mr Wetere Teurunga as chairman. In between dances, items were given by high-class Maori artists from Tauwhare and Morrinsville. During the evening the Mayor, Mr Edgar James, who is chairman of the patriotic committee, visited the hall. Mr James congratulated' the Maoris on their war effort, which was appreciated very much. He regretted that it was not possible for the money they raised to be kept for the Maori members of the forces. All contributions had to go on to the central committee, and all soldiers would be treated alike, he said. Mr Wetere replied and on behalf of Taingakawa Tarapipipi, of Morrinsville, the paramount chief of the Waikato, he thanked Mr James and lire committee for the interest that bad been taken in the functions.
