DOUBLE-HEADED PENNY
TOSS FOR FOOTBALL HONOURS
"COIN CAME FROM CAMBRIDGE"
An unusual happening occurred at Bedford Park, Matamata, on Saturday, when a well-known referee, who, however, was not acquainted with many Matamata officials, called for a coin for two junior tains to toss, states the Record. A prominent officer, who happened to be interested in one of the teams, responded with a penny. This was duly tossed, following which the referee, as an act of courtesy, picked up the penny. This was an act that he cannot recall ever
doing before, and his surprise and consternation may be imagined when, absently turning the coin over, he discovered it was what is known as a double-headed penny. Fortunately, the official concerned was, like Caesar's wife, above suspicion, but he now treasures the coin as a souvenir and keeps it in a different pocket. It is stated the official concerned received the "penny'' as change in Cambridge.
