TWENTY-ONE YEARS OLD

CAMBRIDGE ORPHANS' CLUB BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

The Cambridge Orphans' Club commenced its winter season on Saturday night, the gathering being of special significance, as it marked the 21st birthday of the club. The occasion was observed with due ceremony, and provided a fitting opening to what promises to be a very successful year. Ladies' Night was combined with the opening and there was a large attendance, including visitors from Hamilton, Ohaupo, Rotorua and Te Aroha.

After the new president, Bro. G. E. Haydon, had been installed in office, he extended a welcome to the visitors and especially the new members. He assured members that an enjoyable season was in store. A birthday cake provided by Vicepresident Bro. J. S. Archer was cut during the evening. The twentyone candles were blown out by lifemember Bro. W. White, one of the foundation members of the club. A large silver key was handed to the president, and later it was autographed by all present. The toast of the club was proposed by immediate past-president Bro. C. A. Finch, who is also the South Auckland representative of the Asr sociation of Kindred Clubs. Bro. Finch spoke of the present difficult times, but reminded members that the Orphans' movement in Cambridge was commenced in the year after the Great War concluded. This was an indication of the value of Orphandom in the community.

Bro. Finch made mention of the two members present, Bros. W. G. Care and W. White, who had attended the first meeting that the club had held in 1919. Best wishes -for the continued success of the club were extended *by Bros. S. H. Price, of Ohaupo, and Bro. Lewis, of Te Aroha. An excellent programme was provided, during which the president, Bro. Haydon, gave an interesting talk .entitled, "The Self You Have to Live With." The contributors to the programme were the Club's Orchestra, Miss Jean McLeod, songs; Bros. B. Klaus, recitations; G. Wheeler (Hamilton), songs; M. Bichardson, violin solos; H. Wood (Hamilton), comic songs; T. Mowat, cornet solos.
