WORKING MODEL

NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS INTEREST AT EXHIBITION Visitors to the Centennial Exhibition. at Wellington have found the working model of the New Zealand Railways one of the most fascinating sections. Some ten chains of railway line wander throughout the landscape, done in. relief with mountains, lakes and rivers, on which express, mixed, timber and electric trains run. Tunnels, viaducts, bridges, level crossings and stations are all done to scale, and the "electric -models operated from a kind of signal box with more than a score of levers and many buttons, work on. exactly the same principle as on the Dominion system. The guard’s and engine whistle herald the start of a train, at level crossings the' usual automatic de- ‘ vices signal the approach of the train, which meanders throughout the landscape over flowing water and past lakes and waterfalls to its destination. Signals, Complete in every detail down to red, orange and green lights, control the progress of each train, and it is vastly entertaining to see a working model of the “Limited” slow down and stop on a siding before a red light and several seconds later see a goods or other train emerge from a tunnel and pass. Not until the orange and then the green lights show does the train move off, and then only when the customary signals between guard and engine driver are given.

“Why do people smoke?” asked a London weekly recently, and invited readers to reply. The prize was awarded to the man. who wrote: “Because it make life better worth living.” But does it? Provided your baccy is O-K. smoking certainly helps a lot to brighten existence; but if it’s loaded with nicotine as so many brands unfortunately are, instead of cheering the pilgrim on his way it may affect his nerves, throat or heart, and play up generally with him. But given the right baccy its a boon and a blessing unspeakable. And the right baccy is

within the reach of every New Zea-' lander! Grown and manufactured' in our midst “toasted” combines ex-? quisite flavour and aroma with great purity because toasting frees it so considerably of the injurious nicotine and makes it safe for even the heavy smoker. The five (and only genuine) toasted brands, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish', - Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog),'Rivers head Gold and Desert Gold, merit their wide popularity. They’re' unique. There’s no other tobacco to compare with them.
