RUGBY BENEFIT

MORRINSVILLE DEFEAT CAMBRIDGE FUN IN COSTUME MATCH There was a large attendance at Victoria Square on Saturday when the Cambridge Rugby Sub-Union held a benefit day for the Centennial Carnival Sports' Queen.

Proceedings opened with a burlesque march by the Band, members of the Fire Brigade and Rugby Union, in fancy costumes, from ..the Post, Office to the ground. Much amusement was caused, especially by the entrants in the wheelbarrow race round the square. Still more fun came when the Band and Fire Brigade members, in fancy dress, played the Rugby Union. A short game that was far too long for many, ended in honours being even, 6-all. The wheelbarrow derby was won by Mr A. Feisst and partner.

The principal attraction was the representative match between Morrinsville and Cambridge, which ended in an easy win for Morrinsville by 17 points to 4. The first half was very well contested, Cambridge leading at that stage by 4 to 3. However, in the concluding stages, the locals tired badly, and Morrinsville piled up the points. As the result of the day's attractions a considerable sum will be handed to the Sports' Queen secretary. Afer the day's play all were invited to the barbeque at the home of the Sports Queen, Miss Rhoda Brown. The Teams Morrinsville: B. Soanes, Barker, Coles, T. Clarkin, W. Cameron, Miller, Chase, 0. Harding, Solley, Lewer, Ranovish, Ensor, Faulkner, Hart. Cambridge: Haworth, Charlton, Turei, Baxter, B. Watt, Trubshaw, Russell, A. Nicholl, R. Watts, M. Hewitt, Weir, T. Niels, McGovern, Pye, Williams. Cambridge had the early advantage and Russell, Trubshaw and Charlton were seen in a movement to Morrinsville's 25. Morrinsville retaliated with a rush, Barker, Miller and Chase being prominent. 'Over in the west from a scrum W. Gameron tried to break through but did not get far. Morrinsville remained in the locals' 25 for some time until Trubshaw received to kick through, but Soanes was safe and returned the ball well. Lewer broke through from a rush and passed to Harding, but it was forward. Seconds later the visitors were nearly across in a scramble.

Scrums went down near Cambridge's line. Chase received twice but was well nailed and eventually Williams, McGovern and Neals cleared with a good rush with the ball at toe. Russell, B. Watt and Turei handled from a line-out, the lastnamed lining at the visitors' east 25.

From a scrum, Morrinsville hooked cleanly, for Chase to send to Miller and he found the line at the west 25. A very high ball beat Haworth, and Morrinsville were right back to Cambridge's line, and a force resulted. Morrinsville soon .came again and from a line-out in the west 25, Chase handled to Cameron to Miller and he send Clarkin over for a good try. The kick by Cameron failed. Morrinsville 3, Cambridge 0. Continuing on, R. Russell created a sensation with a clever break clean away. He threw out to Turei to Trubshaw, but he was pushed out in the corner. The ball was kicked well back to Haworth, the local fullback, and he steadied and drop-kicked a beautiful goal from 35 yards out. Cambridge 4, Morrinsville 3.

Haworth was line-finding well and again he sent Morrinsville back with a long kick. Turei marked in the face of a rush, but his mark was charged. Cambridge were later penalised, but Cameron's kick just missed the upright and the first half ended.

Centre play followed the resumption. From a visiting offside movement Hewitt had an unsuccessful shot. Play moved across to the east, where Coles broke away down the line and threw infield. Turei broke the movement and B. Watt eventually found the line. In the loose, Morrinsville worked to Cambridge's south-east corner. From a scrum Chase got it away to Miller to W. Cameron to Barker and he flashed over for a good try. Cameron raised the flags and the score was Morrinsville 8, Cambridge 4. The ball was kicked back to Haworth. He was tackled and held the ball to be penalised. Cameron missed the shot. Morrinsville were back again in a rush to Cambridge's

line, but a force was the outcome. Now Cambridge were penalised in front of their own goal and a present was made to Cameron. Morrinsville 11, Cambridge 4. Play remained in the centre for a period and then Anderson and .Harding indulged in a short-pass-ing rush to Cambridge's 25. From a line-out in the middle west, Cambridge secured and a rebound found the locals in trouble when Barker intercepted at top and raced a quarter of the field to go over unopposed. The kick failed. Morrinsville 14, Cambridge 4. A free kick by Turei and then Haworth put Cambridge well down in the east. From a scrum, Cameron made a break through past halfway. Along the east line Harding carried through with Barker in a fine rush. Harding secured to throw infield and Morrinsville fanned out for what looked like a scoring chance, but a knock-on spoiled the movement. However, Morrinsville came again, and from a scrum, Chase secured to dive through for a clever try. Cameron missed the easiest of kicks. Morrinsville 17, Cambridge 4. Mr C. Hadley refereed.
