SHORTHORN BREEDERS

FIELD DAY AT KAIPAKI INTERESTING DEMONSTRATION Members of the Waikato branch of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Breeders' Association held their annual meeting in conjunction with a held day at the farm of Mr J. Searle, at Kaipaki, on Wednesday. There was a large and representative attendance of breeders at the meeting at which the president, Mr G. D. Hall, presided. Show judges were appointed as follows: Waikato Show, Mr E. M. Washer or Mr W. J. Law; Waikato Central Show, Mr N. Duxfield; Mwrrinsville Show, Mr W. P. Booten or Mr A. M. Fisher; Te Aroha Show, Mr G. D. Hall; Te Awamutu Show, Mr R. D. Cochrane; Otorohanga Show, Mr W. A. Fisher;, Ohura Show, Mr E. M. Wilson or Mr W. P. Booten; Matamata Show, Mr K. Hall.

The question of obtaining a historical record of the Milking Shorthorn breed in New Zealand was raised by Mr Green, who stated that it was his intention to present a gold medal for the best historical accofmts of the breed to be submitted annually. Such accounts, he considered, would prove very valuable in allowing a record to be compiled of the development of the breed in the Dominion. Mr Green was thanked for his offer, members agreeing that some historical record of the breed was needed.

The admission of polled Shorthorns to a special section of the herd book was advocated by Mr J. M. Ranstead, who stated that he intended to bring the matter up at a meeting of the council. Polled animals, he considered, were needed in the dairy herds just as much as in the beef herds. He knew several breeders with polled animals, and if a section of the herd book were devoted to such animals a record could be kept of them. Keen interest was taken in the demonstration given by Mr A. W. Green, and later a judging competition was held.

Following afternoon tea, Mr W. C. Wallace, president of the South Auckland branch of the New Zealand Ayrshire Breeders' Association paid a tribute to the organising ability of Waikato Shorthorn breeders and complimented Mr A. W. Green on the success of the field day.

Mr W. A. Fisher, speaking on behalf of the gathering, thanked Mr Searle for his hospitality and for the use of his high quality stock for the demonstration.
