FARMERS’ LORRIES

DISCUSSION AT MATAMATA A discussion took place at the Rotorua Sub-Provincial meeting of the Farmers’ Union at (Matamata Oil the proposed exemption Of farmers’ lorries when used for their own carting from heavy license fees. Mr K. S. Cox, a member of the Matamata County Council, stated that it was a somewhat minor matter. County councils were asking for a 50 per cent subsidy on rates, and he felt they should concentrate on this. In England farm land was derated, except for buildings. Mr A. E. Robinson, secretary of the Auckland Provincial Executive, replying to .Air H. Rollett, said that inquiries were being made to find out what extra rate would be required to make up the loss. I hen there was the point that finally an extra charge would have to be paid for cartage, if exemption was granted, which meant that other farmers would be again paying lor the farmer who got let off; It was a doubtful benefit.

A motion, urging exemption, moved by Messrs Hawke and Rollett, was finally approved.
