A NEW METHOD

PROSPECTING GOLD BY THE USE OF GEOPHYSICAL INSTRUMENTS. RAND INVESTIGATIONS. A new method of prospecting by geophysical instruments, particuar-ly making use of the seismic method has been developed by Di\ Barger, the noted geologist, who is investigating certain Far East Rand properties on behalf of the Anglo-Transvaal Consolidated. It is confidently expected that, by making use of the new method, information as to the presence or otherwise of any undulations and/or flattening of the reef would be obtained. This method depends on the measurement of the rate of travel of slaves of detonation through the various types of rock. The procedure to be adopted in this particular case would be to lower a delicate instrument down a borehole to the horizon of the Kimberley shales, and by creating a series of detonations on the surface at regular intervals along the assumed dip of the reef, useful information could be obtained. Orders for suitable instruments have been placed in the United States. By this method it will become possible to select, with some degree of certainty, a site for any new borehole that would give the maximum information as to the depth of the reef before further boring took place.
