CAMBRIDGE A V. NAWTON PLAYERS OFF FORM The only game in which Cambridge players were engaged over the week-end was the competition! match between Cambridge A antu Nawton. Playing at Steele Par la Hamilton East, the Cambridge team showed very indifferent form. I With but nine players, Crawshajv decided to send Nawton in. Cra|g and Owsley opened for Nawton to the bowling of Crawshaw and Morriss, Craig sending Crawshaw to the fence off his second ball. A single followed and Owsley faced Ghawshaw to be clean bowled by a rising ball. Mackie joined Craig and these two indulged in some hard hitting, adding 20 before Craig at 31 was; taken behind the wickets by booster,; off Morriss. ChilcotCjoined Mackie and rattled up 40, including a six and three fours, going to a good catch in the deep field off Hughes. Wiltshire looked like another good score, but after one confident appeal from a snick to the ’keeper off Crawshaw, was again taken behind next over from Morriss and the catch allowed. Smith (14) was the only other Nawton player to reach double figures and the total of 135 did not look beyond the capabilities of the Cambridge players, but disaster overtook the local men when they went in to bat. Five wickets were down for 3 runs, Owsley striking a patch and taking four in his first over. Then six were down for only two more runs when Hughes and Crawshaw became associated and put on 30 runs. These two looked set for a big score, but at 10 Crawshaw was completely skittled by Owsley, who at this stage had the remarkable figures of five for 3 runs. Foster joined Hughes and these two added a dozen before the former was caught at square leg, the innings closing at 49 for eight wickets. By this time, the Cambridge side was completely demoralised, and Nawton had no trouble in putting on 110 for the first wicket. However,' the position is not irretreivable next Saturday and with a full team, should form be struck, the game may be saved.
