GOLFING YEAR
THE CAMBRIDGE CLUB PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT 1 \ ‘“’From every point of view, the Season was one of progress,” states |he president, Mr A. Wilkinson, in the report of the Cambridge Golf (lub, io be presented at the annual meeting on Tuesday evening. The finances of the club are in a 1 ealthy condition. The total revenue for the year was £7OB, this be/ing an increase of £BO on the previous year. Subscriptions show an increase of £7O, while green fees reached the record total of £76 17/-. The general increase is of course reflected oh the debit side of the balance sheet. Wages are £6O more than previously, and an extra £l6 was spent on seed and manures. Benzine and repairs, most of the latter being due to the Triplex mower, amounted to £3B more than last year. It was felt that the time has arrived when the club should purchase a new mower. Several tournaments were held during the year. The Cambridge open championship over three days, was the most successful. In addition a Coronation tournament was held. The club was honoured by a visit from a party consisting of the winner of the New Zealand open championship and some of the leading professionals. These gentlemen expressed their pleasure at playing on such a delightful course.
The championships were played according to programme, the lady champion being Mrs Freeman and the men’s champion Mr W. Hewett.
The committee has kept before it the possibility of the erection of a suitable club-house and accommodation for a resident caretaker of the links and the club’s property. Realising that it will be necessary to acquire a permanent tenure before the club could finance such a scheme, a sub-committee has pressed through all channels available to obtain from the Defence Department a lease of the links at a fixed rental with a permanent right of renewal.
Through the assistance of the Borough Council, and Mr Coulter, M.P,. there is every prospect of obtaining legislation to enable the Defence Department to grant such a lease. The links were recently inspected by Colonel Meade, and on his visit he expressed himself as favourably disposed to granting the club better tenure.
Thanks were extended to all those persons who assisted in the running 'of the club, especially the secretary, Air C. R. Haworth, and also the ladies’ secretary, Miss G. Brann.
Thanks were also due to those ladies who attended at the clubhouse on the occasion of sundry tournaments and inter-club matches for the purpose of catering for the men. The president considers it would be a distinct improvement if this meeting could arrange some other form of catering for these occasions.
