NEW BRIDGE
WORK ON THE APPROACHES GOOD PROGRESS MADE Although work on the approaches to the proposed new Karapiro Bridge was commenced only a month ago, considerable progress has been made by a gang of twelve riien, and now the route of the new road can be ascertained.
• The new bridge will span the creek nearer the Waikato River, and considerable filling will be necessary on v the Karapiro side to provide a foundation. To do this a hill on the borough sanitary depot will be removed and the spoil carried across the road to form a bank almost to the river's edge.
At present the men are engaged in clearing the locality of scrub and trees. The hill.has been grubbed and burnt clear, but added difficulties on the river side have been a number of large poplar trees and stumps. The last of these are now being removed, and an additional gang of men will assist in pushing the work ahead next week. The new road has been pegged but in a straight line and in several places on the Karapiro side, the route is emphasised where cutting has been commenced. Just outside the borough boundary (where the .tar-sealing commences) the. new route cuts off the corner of a property adjoining the river. The present road is then crossed and a cutr ting is made in the side of the sanitary depot hill. Continuing in a straight line the road is crossed again to join up with the bridge. The curve in Duke Street hill will be practically eliminated, while the grade will aiso be reduced.
