WAIKATO BEEF
“BEST OF THE EMPIRE”
SMITHFIELD BUYER’S COMMENT
Waikato farmers interested in the production of fat cattle for the chilled beef trade wilt be encouraged by the favourable comment made about their product in the December issue of “Modern Meat Marketing,” a well-known journal of the London meat trade. “The palm for the best consignment of Empire chilled beef received at Smithfield during December goes to a shipment handled by Wilson Meats, Ltd., from Auckland, New Zealand,” wrote “Buyer” in his monthly column entitled, “My Walk Through Smithfield.”'
An inquiry made by a representative of this’'paper to Mr B. L. Orr, representative of Wilson Meats, Ltd. elicited the information that practically the whole of the firm’s requirements are purchased in the Waikato. The complimentary reference by this London writer is further proof that the Waikato can produce the best chilled beef in the Empire.
Another paragraph in the same journal states: “It is a wonder that fat stock shows in Southern Rhodesia, Australia and New Zealand are not held at a period which would permit the best of cattle being treated as ‘chillers’ and showing to advantage on the hooks at Smithfield just when the American firms stage their displays of prize beef from the South American shows.”
