BLACKBERRIES
ON SALE IN SHOPS FARMERS’ UNION’S PROTEST ‘ f-» “Blackberries for Sale, 4d a lb.” This line in the advertising columns of a metropolitan newspaper was the subject of comment at the February meeting of the Morrinsville branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday; , -k. . , “I think it is a scandal that people should.be allowed to collect and sell blackberries,” said Mr A. Topham. Blackberries were a noxious weed and the plants should not be allowed to grow- Picking the berries for commercial purposes would help the spread of the pest.
“I saw blackberries for sale at 6d a lb in a shop window in Hamilton,” said Mr S. A. Ferguson.
Mr Topham: We should draw the attention of the Minister of Agriculture to the fact that blackberries are being offered for.. sale. You might just as well sell ragwort seed. A motion of protest to the Minister was passed.
