BUTTER BOXES

SUPPLIES RUNNING SHORT

LIMITATION OF TYPES

“Although in the! aggregate ample supplies of . white pine for butter boxes are available from, our indigenous forests for mqny years ..immediately available supplies, in some of the more important dairying regions have become exhausted,” said Mr A. Seed, secretary of the Dominion Federated Sawmillers’ Association and the New Zealand Boxmakers’ Association, when commenting on the decision of the Government to limit boxes to two types. .

the needs of the dairying industry,” said Mr Seed,, “now involves a certain measure of organising, so that available supplies of white pine will be distributed to the best economic advantage. Also, it is distinctly advisable that the remaining white pine supplies should be made to last as long as possible. No other wood in the world is so eminently suitable as our kahikatea, both for its appearance and its containing properties. “For two reasons, therefore, the eking out of supplies and the eliminating of needless transport cost on thick boxes, it has been decided by the Government that the use of the old standard type of hn. box for butter export purposes shall be discontinued after the close of the current dairying season.

“Sawmills producing white pine and the box-making industry are

entirely at one with the department in this decision, as another effect will be to reduce the number of thicknesses of timber which have, to be cut, stacked and dried for making the millions ot butter boxes which have, to be provided .every dairying season.”
