LUCKY WOMAN
BAD LUCK OF ANOTHER £2014 FOR £l. “Robin Goodfellow,” in the London “Daily Mail,” states that on the concluding day of the English flat racing season at Manchester, a woman had a remarkable win for an outlay of £l. For that amount she received £2014. She telephoned on the day of the races to a branch of the official agency which collects credit tote bets and took one tote double ticket for Free Fare and the Sessay Wood colt, both of whom won. There were only four winning tickets and the dividend was £9ll 14s. But in addition to this wager the woman had an ordinary 10s all up at tote odds on the same horses. In this case the stake went on Free Fare, and when he won the agency fulfilled her purpose by placing the winnings plus the original stake on the Sessay Wood colt. In this case the lucky backer won a further £llO2. The odds mentioned in the “all up” bet may seem almost inconceivable, but they are quite correct. Free Fare’s straight-out tote dividend was at the rate of approximately 31 and a-half to 1, and that of the Sessay colt at about 66-1. The latter got the race on protest.
It is to be hoped the backer was paid, as such a double would be a nasty knock for other than a big firm, and English papers are full of complaints from people whose startingprice bookmakers had neglected to settle on anything. Another Shock. Another woman was even more unfortunate over the same double than the one which struck it lucky. She dreamt that certain numbers won the double, and duly backed them, her second leg being Carlino, owned by Lord Rosebery. Carlino won by a head, and as there were only two tickets taken on the winning double, the woman was joyfully on her way to collect £1,823, u r hen a protest was notified. Carlino was disqualified for interfering with the Sessay Wood colt, and the two people who did not collect on the double were left with a “bad luck” story that would last them a lifetime.
