CRICKET

SURPRISES ON SATURDAY CITY DEFEAT HIGH SCHOOL Surprises were registered in the final series in the second round of the Cambridge Cricket Association’s competion which concluded on Saturday. High School collapsed completely in the first innings and compiled a total which was seven runs short of the first innings lead. The game resulted in a win for City on the first innings. Leamington scored their first win of the season in a straight-out decision over United Services, when a win on the first innings only, seemed likely. Services were weakly represented however, but played well in a difficult fight. City and High School

The City v. High School game was continued at the High School. Maisey (not out 6) was absent and Muller (57 not out) was joined by Boyce. Neither batsmen settled down however and Muller returned after adding only 2 to his score. Hubbard failed also, but Watt and Humphries brightened the prospects in a splendid partnership. After the separation, however, the City attack devastated the tail and the innings closed for 108. City compiled 114 on the previous Saturday. Oldfield and Litchwark had been the succesful bowlers.

City opened shakily, and a collapse appeared likely when the second wicket fell for two runs. Hughes opened carefully and with a fine 29, brightened prospects, which were consolidated by Wallace and K. Conder in a fine forcing partnership, in which the former compiled 31 not out. Only five wickets had fallen when stumps were drawn. With the score board at the Square reading 5(5 runs for five wickets, United Services continued the first innings against the Leamington attack, but Smyth (7) was the only batsman to offer assistance when Macdonald, batting well was playing a fighting innings. The total reached 77 when the last wicket fell. L. McKinnon had taken four for the wickets.

Leamington did not strike the same form in their second effort with the bat, but N. McKinnon (29) and L. McKinnon (17) were difficult men to trap. Wickets fell steadily following the dismissal of the former. Murdock (12) batted soundly and strengthened the tail considerably. The innings closed for 79. Services returned for their second innings facing a deficit of 157 runs and only six batsmen available. It was a difficult task, and when Woolley was dismissed with the total at 1, the chances seemed hopeless. Three wicets fell for five, then Low, returning to his old form, rattled up 23 runs, in partnership with Ed. Chard, who was also prominent in a fighting innings of 20, which included one brilliant six. Maisey added a valuable 9 before the innings ' closed for Gl.
