CLEARING RAGWORT
IN MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL COMPLIMENTED A deputation representing many thousands of acres of land situated between Tapapa, Tokoroa and Putaruru, and comprising Messrs A. R. Vosper, J. J. Shine, H. Newell, Musker and Cochrane, waited on the Matamata County Council on Friday to specially compliment members and officials on the determined fight which was being made against the ragwort menace. Mr Vosper (Putaruru) said that every thoughtful farmer appreciated the manner in which the Council had gone into every part of the ragwort question and in the determined stand it was taking in its efforts to keep the menace in check the Council had earned the highest appreciation of the farming community and they would have their fullest support. Mr J. J. Shine remarked that no words would be too strong to describe the ragwort menace or praise too high for the fine work which the Council was doing. He assured them that they were 100 per cent, behind them. The ragwort menace was now well beyond the individual farmer and had become a national question. What was needed was a parasite to tackle the weed in the back country and in odd corners.
Other members also spoke and councillors expressed their appreciation of the remarks made. > Earlier in the meeting the Council had decided to call together again the committee of delegates from other councils which had met several years ago prior to the passing of the Ragwort Act to consider motions arising out of the administration of this Act.
