LEAMINGTON ROADS
TAR-SEALING SHAKESPEARE STREET DISCUSSION OF TOWN BOARD Members of the Leamington Town Board, who met last evening, discussed the proposal of Mr Hounslow for the surfacing of Shakespeare Street and the improving of other roads. Mr Hounslow pointed out to the board that Shakespeare Street should be tar-sealed, in order to maintain the surface. The member considered that Mr R. Coulter, M.P. for Waikato, should be invited to confer with the board with a view to having the scheme placed upon the Public Works estimates. Other members were of the opinion that it would be a step in the right direction, for the upkeep of the street is a fairly expensive item. Mr Garland said that the Main! Highways Board had decided to seal highways first, but he was sympathetic with Mr Hounslow’s proposal. Other members voiced their approval. Mr Hounslow said that he thought many other roads in Leamington should be improved also, because before better roads were formed there was no inducement to new residents. Some members contended that it would increase the ratepayeds liabilities, but Mr Hounslow was of the opinion that an inexpensive scheme could be completed by relief labour. He mentioned the cemetery road as an important case. The board decided that relief labour was not available in sufficient quantities at present, and nothing was finalised.
While tar-sealing the Pukerimu Hoad the Waipa County Council extended operations to include the section ol’ the board’s road, and the meeting decided that as agreed prior to tar-sealing, the County Council should he paid the contribution asked.
