THE ROTORUA MEETING FIRST DAY’S RESULTS The annual meeting of the Rotorua Racing Club was commenced at Arawa Park on Saturday in fine weather. There was a large attendance, the totalisator handling £19,261, compared with £14,147 10/last year, an increase of £5113 10/-. The chief event of the day, the Rotorua Cup, was won by the favourite Enge, while the locally owned Solomon returned a dividend close on half a century in winning the Tourist Handicap. Cambridge Horses Cambridge interests were represented in the first event, the Arawa Park Stakes by Golden Princess and Abbess of Whitby, but neither played a prominent part in the race. Mr A. Coubrough’s Sandy Dix installed favourite for the Pohutu High-weight Handicap, but could only finish seventh. Gloucester was also well fancied in the Mokoia Handicap after his win at Auckland, but this time he did not get to the front early and in the run home finished third behind Bellkyrian and Queen Nona. Sir Tommy finished fourth. Investors received a surprise in the concluding event, when Mr L. S. Otway’s Solomon, the twelfth favourite, beat Prince Yen by a nose. The winner finished on much better than usual. Results were:
