CRICKET

CITY-HIGH SCHOOL DUEL

LEAMINGTON’S SOUND POSITION The final series of games in' the second round of the Cambridge Cricket Association’s competition opened on Saturday. High School are playing City at the High School, while at the Square Leamington are in competition with United Services. The weather was ideal for cricket. On one of the few occasions the wicket at the Square favoured the batsmen, but Services were unable to grasp the opportunity, and are now faced with a difficult task to stave off defeat. The outfield was very holding on both grounds. A keen duel between Higlj School and City is certain, but tlie two-day limit may prevent an outright win for either team. High School have commenced their light for the lead on the first innings, brilliantly. High School v. City City occupied the wickets first and Munroe and Oldfield went along slowly to the bowling of Watt and Morriss. Oldfield brightened the pace somewhat while Munroe was content to uphold the other end. Oldfield batted excellently and 53 runs were up before Munroe was stumped out for 11. Hughes partnered Oldfield and when he fell for 12, K. Conder batted steadily in singles for 12 also. Oldfield was finally caught by Boyce, off Watt. The remaining batsmen followed each other in a procession and the innings closed for 114. Watt and Morriss had shared the wickets.

High School sent Muller and Morriss to pave the way in their first innings, and the former displayed brilliant form to compile 57, including 5 sixes, and when stumps were drawn he was undefeated, Morriss was subdued and let Muller make the pace. When 42 runs were totalled Morriss (11) succumbed to an lbw appeal from Kelly. Maisey batted quietly while Muller cracked Oldfield, Crawshaw and Kelly all around the wicket. School have 73 runs for the loss of one wicket. The scoring details are: CITY. —First Innings: W. Leamington Score Well A surprise came soon after ington opened, when N. McKinnon was trapped by Macdonald after scoring 3 only. L. McKinnon, the next man in, set about retrieving the position and batted brilliantly, taking few risks, and not forcing the pace. D. McKinnon, the other opening batsman, was caught oIT Macdonald for 7 when 21 runs were on the board. Reithmuller had a short but merry life at the crease, hitting three successive fours before Maisey levelled the middle stump. R. McDonald then partnered L. McKinnon in a rattling partnership and lifted all bowlers over the fence several times. Sayers replaced Macdonald and quietened both batsmen before trapping McKinnon (59) lbw. In Sayers’ next over Bright was caught by Maisey and McDonnell’s middle pin left the ground. The innings closed for 155.

Services opened with Macdonald and Shannon but the first wicket fell for 4, Shannon (1) being clean bowled by N. McKinnon. Sayers partnered Macdonald and both batsmen appeared to be at ease and mastering the bowling, when the former was run out in attempting a single. Woolley batted well and with Macdonald still hitting for runs prospects brightened. Woolley (11) however was caught by a wellplaced square-leg field. Low (3) and Maisey (2) were unable to support Macdonald, and fell to L. McKinnon’s swingers. Five wickets are down for 50 runs, Macdonald being not out 31 after an excellent knock.
