SUNDAY SERVICES GOOD CONGREGATIONS There were agaijw good congregations at the local .Churches on Sunday when the weather was cool and pleasant, St. Andrew’s Parish .Services were conducted at Qhaupo, Tamahere and Whitehall, as well as at the Parish Church. At all centres there were good attendances. ... The ambitious request of the mother of Zebcdee’s. children formed the basis of the Vicar’s sermon at Evensong. “Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of?” was the Master’s enquiry. The cup of sorrow and humiliation, 1 of pain and of death, signifying thereby the approaching agony in Gethsemane. The whole discourse was summod up in Whittier’s words, “Faith must have its Olivet, and love its Salvary.’ ’ Trinity Presbyterian At Trinity Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning the Rev. D. M. Hercus, of Brooklyn Church, Wellington, was the preacher. There was a large attendance at evening worship, conducted by the resident minister, the Rev. A. C. McLean. A service at ftoto-o-rangi was conducted by Mr J. J. Smyth. Farewell Services at St. Paul s At St. Paul’s Methodist Church inspiringly large congregations gathered for the farewell services, conducted by the Rev. James Richards. The familiar hymns chosen were most heartily sung. The solo, “Stranger of Galilee,” sung by Miss Nona Easter in the morning, and the quartettes rendered at night by Messrs W. Lane, H. Wood, R. Easter and J. Richards, were much appreciated aids in the worship. As final messages the preacher spoke in the morning from I.Peter, I—9: “The end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls,” and at night from Gat. 6—14: “God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” A large number remained for Holy Communion at the close of the morning service. Kaipaki Church There was a fairly good attendance at the Methodist service held on Sunday afternoon last. The Rev. J. Richards conducted the service, and took the opportunity of saying farewell to the Ivaipaki congregation. The Rev. Mr Richards carries with him the love and respect of all to whom ho has ministered, and many kind expressions of success and good luck were extended to him at the close of the service. Miss Scott presided at the organ. Bapt’st Church At the Baptist Church, Pastor H. G. Smyth presented the sixth of his series of talks on The Beatitudes, “The Pure in Heart.” A Communion service was held at the close of the morning service. “This same Jesus —in like manner,” was Pastor Smyth’s subject in the evening.
