“COULEUR DE ROSE”
HIS EXCELLENCY’S WISH FOR NEW ZEALAND. ' ENGLAND’S FLORAL EMBLEM. “The roseUs "the national floral emblem of England and should remind us all of. one link, with the Old from which we are sprung,” said ; his Excellency, the .Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, when opening the Rose Show of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society on Wednesday. “The attractiveness of the rose is due to colour, form and perfume. Seldom are all three combined in one variety as in the case of ‘Madame Abel Chatenay,’ And yet a perfect rose should possess all three. It may be difficult to combine a full measure of both meat and milk in a cow and! still more so of meat and wool in a sheep, but in a rose all three of its requisites can be achieved. I should like to see special awards given at flower shows to blooms of this description. “The dominant colour of the rose is red or pink. It is not the fiery red of revolution. It is rather the gentle pink or crimson of health and hope. We speak of a certain bright human outlook or environment as beinig “Couleur de- Rose r ”-a condition redolent of optimism,: contentment and confidence. I can wish nothing betten for you, your naturally favoured valß ley arid your sun-kissed country, that your lives may be suffused with/ ‘Couleur de Rose’ and this is likely to be all the more £o if you maintain affectionate and trustful contact with the Old Land whose emblem it is . “I understarid that pickled rosebuds are being used as food in parts of England. It cannot be a nutritious meal. 'lf roses- are ‘pickled’ at all how much better in the form of ‘potpourri’- made Of rose leaves, cloves, myrrh, and other condiments such ~ass' our forbears made and treasured in Oriental porcelain jars.” V
