CHAIRMAN RESIGNS

HAUTAPU DRAINAGE BOARD MR J. W. BARTLETT'S SERVICE At a meeting of tho Hautapu Drainage Board held in the secretary's office yesterday the chairman, Mr J. W. Bartlett wrote tendering his resignation as he has sold his farm and is now living in Hamilton. Mr Bartdctt has been a member of the board for. the past 23 years and chairman for five years. Mr Bartlett wrote: "A 3 I am no longer a ratepayer, I cannot hold a seat on the Hautapu Drainage Board. It is with sincere regret that I part from my fellow members and I wish, to thank them for their co-operation in carrying out the work of the board. My position as chairman has 'been a very happy one and I hope my successor will be as fortunate as I have been.

"With regard to the drains, they arc now in better order than I have ever known them in the 23 years that I have been on the board. I would have liked to have seen the Hautapu culvert lowered, but T leave "that work for the new board to consider." Mr Bartlett thanked tho secretary, Mr Edgar James for hi 3 unfailing courtesy and the manner in which the books had been, kept. "I am sure the board could not be better served," said Mr Bartlett. "I have worked with all the secretaries the board has had and have received bettor service from Mr James than we ever had." ..'...., In the 23 years of association with the, board Mr Bartlett has never missed a meeting. Members' Tributes Members of the board all eulogised the splendid work done in the interests of the ratepayers by Mr Bartlett during his term of office. Mr Bartlett was a man who conducted tho meetings with courtesy to.-fhe members and controlled the affairs in an able and dignified manner. He had a thorough knowledge of local body work and was an expert on drainage matters. The secretary was instructed to convey to Mr Bartlett the board's sincere regret at his resignation and to wish him good health and happiness in his retirement. ' Acting Chairman Appointed Mr E. J. White was appointed acting chairman until after the; next election. It was decided to call nominations for two members of the board to fill the extraordinary vacancies caused by tho resignations of Messrs J. W. Bartlett and G. W. Simpson, who" has also ceased to be a ratepayer.
