BOROUGH COUNCIL

THE MONTHLY MEETING GENEEAL BUSINESS The monthly meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was held on .Thursday evening, when there were present, the Mayor (Mr C. H. Priestley), Crs.; Edgar James, A. H. Nicoll, Walter MoOre ahd'C. W. Boyce. ; Town Clerk, Mr F. T. Eay, and enginleer, Mr T. Dix. were, also in attendance. ••■""'•<.■ ...... j ' Painting Town Hall : ; The Mayor stated that the improvements made to tho inside of the Town Pall of late years;had]niado.the exterior look dingy. t; The building was too valuable to let;: go back and £l2O had been allowed on the estimates for renovations. Mr Priestley said he had at first thought of plastering the building, but this more expensive and necessitate' employing outside ' tbour. Tenders were before tho meeting for the labour only to paint the hall. The council intends to supply the paint, which will cost £45. Cutting Down Tree The Mayor referred to the improvements made to the Jubilee Gardens and suggested that the Lawsoniana tree bo removed. He said the garden was really too small for such a large tree, and it was also a source of danger to motorists now that xhe clock tower obscured .the intersection. Cr Boyce contended,, that the tree should not 'be removed until another shrub had grown to match the ■liquid amber on the left of the clock. ■lf the £ree were removed it' would leave a bare outlook. •' ■ K : ! ' ; Other councillors agreed with Cr Boyce, and it was decided not to remove the tree. Opening of Clock ; The Mayor remarked that he hoped to have some function to formally open the clock. He did not favour anything spectacular, but thought if representatives of the surrounding local bodies were invited to attend it would be sufficient. It was decided that such a function be held on Friday afternoon, October 5. General Mr A. J. Law, the manager of the Bank 'of, New South Wales, wrote thanking the council for the consideration shown regulating the hours of the- chiming of the town clock. Mr E. L. Eodgers wrote requesting that the increase of 15/- per annum on his Glasgow lease.be removed, at least, until the depression lifted. The, council! could not ag-r«evto T ;the ( request. The Audit Department wrote in reference to a reduction made for prompt payment of abattoir charges appearing on the balance sheet, which did not conform to the borough by-laws. It was decided that the by-law be altered to conform with the reduced, charges. The secretary, Cambridge School Committee, wrote thanking.the council for concessions made in connection with the break-up' party hold in the Town Hall. Mr C. D. Margan was granted permission to remove a tree from the rear of his premises in Victoria Street. Mr C. G. Vosper, of Maungatautari, wrote requesting a connection with the pipe-line to provide water for his troughs. The council agreed to the request. Mr W. H. Woollcy wrote.requesting that a tree in front of his premises be trimmed as there was danger of a limb' breaking off should a gale occur. The matter was left in the hands of the engineer. The agreement of a lease of the fire station by the" Fire Board for a farther five years at a rental of 10/- p er week, on condition that £l2O be spent on improvements was s signed. The Mayor stated that the improvements were already carried out and the- station was now a.credit to the town.
