AROUND THE BOROUGH

ENGINEER'S REPORT GENERAL MAINTENANCE WORK At the monthly mooting of the Cambridge Borough Council on Thursday evening, the engineer, Mr T. Dix, reported on the operations of the staff and plant since the last meeting. Tlie general maintenance of the borough had been carried out as usuaj, including street cleaning. The grader was at work when time permitted, and one or two streets received attention. During the month 32 yards of gravel were spread, patching roads in different portions of the town. Forming Brycc Street has been the principal work undertaken by unemployed men and is now completed. Several footpaths "throughout the town have been-cleaned. At present the majority of the unemployed are engaged reforming Jubilee Gardens in connection with the clock tower, improving and returfing the banks. Everything at the gasworks at the present time is quite satisfactory. The department, is busy attending to blocked pipes, etc. At the waterworks the high and low pressure systems are both in good order. The sewerage scheme is work-' ing quite satisfactorily. Building permits to the value v of £S4S wore issued .during the month. The erection qf the tower for the town clock is now completed, and the grounds arc being laid out as instructed by the council, including a "cyclone" netting wire covering over the lily pond. .■ ■ Grosvenor Street Drain Mr Dix reported having taken levels in Grqsvenor Street with reference to the deep open drain on the west side of the road. In his opinion the deep drain is not necessary and may be filled up with gravel to the path level ready for kcrbing and channelling. The storm water off Grosvenor Street comes from as far as King Street. This may be led ■ clown the drain on the eastern side of the road, being the permanent drainage for that section of the town. The drain on the eastern side will need piping at some future date when the footpath is formed to the permanent levels.
