LITERARY SOCIETY

TAREWELL TO SECRETARY EVENING AT PARISH HALL Members of the Cambridge Literary and Dramatic Society assembled at the Parish Hall last evening to say farewell to Mr and Mrs S., L. Vale, who are leaving the district. For the last twelve months Mr Vale has been secretary of the society, and various speakers paid appreciative tributes to his work and keen interest in the organisation. A most enjoyable musical programme had been arranged by the president, Mrs G. G. L. Taylor, including pianoforte items by Mr A. G. Boyce, Mr T. H. Hampshire and Miss Rita Price, songs by Miss Jean McLeod, Messrs G. James and M. Calvert, and a recitation by Miss* Audrey Savory. Mr A. G. Boyce was the accompanist. An amusing competition was won by Miss Rona Taylor.

On behalf of the society Mrs Taylor expressed keen regret at Mr and Mrs Vale's departure. She : spoke 'of Mr Vale's willingness at all times to do everything that was asked of him. His untiring efforts on behalf of the society had resulted in a big increase in membership during his term of office. Mr S. N. Ziman, who is taking over tho secretaryship of the society, supported Mrs Taylor's remarks. The president then presented. Mr Vale with a travelling case on behalf of the members. As well as members of the society, several members of the Chamber Vv of Commerce were also present. On behalf. of the Chamber, Mr H. B. Amy.es paid a warm tribute to Mr Vale's keen interest in public affairs during his residence in the town, and particularly t.Q, his efforts as president of the Chamber. In reply Mr Vale expressed keen regret at leaving Cambridge. He said that he had felt it a pleasant duty to do anything he had done for the town or, for the society. ' At the conclusion of his reply Mr Vale was accorded musical honours. A pleasant evening concluded with supper served by the ladies of the society. ' •• Several apologies for absence were read by the president, including Mr and Mrs F. R. Wooldridge, the Rev. C. W. Clark and Mr A. R. Gascoignc.
