PETITION FAILS
DISSOLVING OF PARLIAMENT GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S REPLY A petition, purporting to be signed by 54,000 Parliamentary electors, was recently forwarded to the GovernorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, by Mr O. M. Moore, of 135 Manners Street, Wellington, praying that His Excellency might be pleased “to dissolve the present Parliament of this Dominion at the end of the 1934 session upon the grounds that the said Parliament has, Avithout mandate from the electors, legislated to. extend its term of office for a further period than that foi Avhich it was elected.’’ In aeknoAA'ledging receipt of the petition, Sir Cecil Day, official secretary to the Governor-General, has replied as folloAvs: “I am bidden by the Gover-nor-General to state, further, that ooforc signifying his assent on His Majesty’s behalf to the bill passed by both Houses of the General Assembly, which contained provision for extending .from three years to four years the term of the present Parliament, His Excellency satisfied himself that the enactment Avas A\ T ithin the legislatiA r e competence of Parliament. In these circumstances His Excellency is unable to accede, to the prayer of the petitioners.”
