TOWN HALL TALKIES
"PADDY THE NEXT BEST THING" JANET GAYNOR TRIUMPH With all the charm that has characterised her performances ever since her successful and never-to-be-forgotten iolc in "Seventh Heaven," Janet Gaynor grows increasingly charming with the advent of every new film. In "Paddy, the Next Best Thing," which comes to the Town Hall Theatre for tomorrow, Thursday and Friday's programmes, her whimsical brand of humour stands out against the stalwart romantic qualities of Warner Baxter who, increasingly popular in this type of role, is the rich mail so enamored with the hoyden in Janet Gayor that he wins her in spite of it. "Paddy" is gorgeous in its pictorial scope, laid against the background of an Irish coastal town where a once influential family is reduced to circumstances that Janet tries to improve. Fearlessly she goes into the market place to dispose of her father's chattels so that the family may exist. Margaret Lindsay, who will be remembered as the girl in the "Titanic" sequences of "Cavalcade," has the secondary lead in the production and acquits herself very well. Walter Connolly, famous stage actor, performs with his usual aptitude in the role of Janet's ailing father. '' Pilgrimage'' To-night To-night, for one night only, "Pilgrimage," a powerful, emotional drama will be screened. In the role of the mother, Henrietta Crosman gives a superb performance. Heather Angel, a beautiful newcomer to the American screen, makes a highly auspicious heginning in the role of one of the young lovers. Norman Foster and Marian Nixon are understanding and attractive in the romance that opens the story. This Fox production has the sweep of "Cavalcade" and the intimate niceties of "State Fair."
