TENNIS SEASON OPENS. DISTEICT CLUBS FUNCTION. The tennis season In this district will soon be in full swing. Gin Saturday last In delightful conditions the Hautapu, Leamington and Horahora Clubs held their official openings. As advertised elsewhere the Fencourt Club will hold its official opening on Saturday next. THE LEAMINGTON CLUB. The official opening of the Leamington Tennis Club took place on Saturday afternoon at their courts in the Leamington Domain. A more favourable afternoon could not have been chosen, and the: ceremony was well attended by enthusiasts. In opening ') the courts for the 193334 season, Mr J. Brackenridge, president of the club, wished all the members a very enjoyable and successful year. On behalf of, the Leamington Domain Board, Mr A. E. Peppercorn spoke a few words, and complimented the club on their three fine-courts. Mrs W. Johnson, in'the unavoidable absence of Mrs Brackenridge, was asked to serve the'first ball oyer the nets, and the courts were declared open. A dainty afternoon tea was then served by the Ladies' Committee, after which a Yankee tournament took place. This was won by Miss E. Billing and Mr C. Lye. HAUTAPU CLUB. At the official opening of the Hautapu Club there were about 50 members and friends present. Owing to the unavoidable' absence of Mr G-. T. Barr, president, Mr W. B. Laurent, < vice-president, officially opened the courts for the season, and congratulated the club on having three fine courts at its disposal. Mr Laurent also congratulated the committee on having worked so hard, and in such short time, to enable the club to make an early start for the season. After wishing the club all the success of the season, the vice-president then called upon Mrs G. T. Barr to serve the first ball over the net. A delicious afternoon tea, supplied by the ladies present, was then partaken of. Ordinary tennis was indulged in by the players. HORAHORA INTEREST. About 100 people were present on Saturday at the official opening of -the Horahora Tennis Club, including members of the Maungatautari and the Power Station Clubs. j. ;; . ;> .. The president, Mr J. M. Scott, web corned everyone and mentioned that the past year had been a great success financially and otherwise. He suggested making a few improvements to the tea-room and seating accommodation. After declaring: the courts,open for the season, Mrs Scott hit the first ball over the net. Several new members were enrolled. The day was perfect for playing and everyone enjoyed the day's outing. A tasty lunch was handed round, also a dainty afternoon tea, provided by the ladies. MAUNGATAUTARI CLUB. The Maungatautari Club held its annual meeting in the hall last week, very few being present. In view of the likelihood of a Cricket Club being formed in the near future, little business was done, many being more enthusiastic about cricket than tennis this season. Nothing was decided regarding tennis until after the cricket meeting on Wednesday evening.
