Tho Waikato Times Rugby critic has the following to say regarding the Finlay Cup game last Saturday: "Saturday’s main game at Hamilton in which the focal representatives only just had the decision against Cambridge in tho semi-final for the Finlay Cup, was productive of fast, bright football —a relief from some of the drab club matches this season. Cambridge distinctly had the upper hand and the final scores ( —U> —14) were hardly a fair indication of the run of play. "Hamilton’s chances against Matamat a in the final of the Finlay Cup at Matamata on Saturday week are pretty lean, unless their display against Cambridge in tho semi-final on Saturday is improved upon. Their performance was far from impressive. The forwards were fairly sound and gave ready supply from the scrums and line-outs, especially the latter, in which Cambridge were beaten practically every time. But the backs failed miserably and threw away heaps of opportunities.

"Where They Slipped. —Fumbling, wc-ak tackling and faulty comb'nation were the chief defects among the Hamilton backs. They developed ’ crossfield passing rushes which made little progress and were usually broken up before the ball reached the winger. When the marks are close up the inside backs should exploit the stab-kick or throw long high passes to the men outside. Short-distance passes with the opposition a yard or so away are useless. In marked contrast, R. Shaw, the Cambridge second five-eighths, sent out. ideal passes before the goal-line. "Pretty Work. Considering that their forwards received little ball from the scrums and throw-ins, tho Cambridge backs were exceptionally nippy on Saturday in the Finlay Cup game at Hamilton. Tapper, on the wing, was ever fast and willing and stopped opposition. effectively. Holmes. F. Shaw and E. Shaw all combined prettily at times and treated the public to fast, open play. "A Live Wire.—Pat Clarkin, guardian of the home goal-line, just about met his match on Saturday when he had to counter deadly line-kicks from the boot of K. R-oid, full-back in the Auckland Grammar School fifteen, who donned the Cambridge jersey for -the game. Reid but-kicked him several times and was 'certainly a live wire. Clarkin, always hard-pressed, saved a few moral tries and on tho whole played a good game. McDell, Hamilton half, was not at his best form and slung out some erratic ones.

"The Cambridge Pack. Not for many moons have Hamilton spectators scon such clever forward play as that put. up by the Cambridge pack. Fred Shaw was all over the field, the veteran, Dan Bourke, was always wlrere most wanted, while Chapman, Miller, and G. Reid toiled in tight and loose.”
