HAMILTON MILITARY BALL. Among those present at the Military Ball held in the Frankton Town Hall on Thursday night were: Mrs Gordon Vosper, Mrs Fred Ivingsford, Mrs C. W. Vennell. The Misses Nooline Banks, Ruth Soutcr, Jean Brewer, Betty Lee, and Judy Blythe (Wanganui). , W.C.T.U. MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in St. Paul’s schoolroom on Wednesday afternoon. The devotional ■exercises were conducted by Mrs Mis: ■gen. There was a very large attendance of mothers and children as it was the cradle roll afternoon. Mrs Hogan presided. A very inspiring address was delivered by Mrs Craig, of Hamilton, en “The Power of Women in the World.” The following interesting programme was much enjoyed: Pianoforte solo, June Skcllcrn; recitation, Charlotte Mackay; recitation, Inn Holmes; solo, Mrs Kernsley; recitation, Edward Webb; pianoforte solo, Don Kernsley; solo, Mrs Holmes; recitation, Selwyn Riley. At the piano, Mrs Skellorn. Six new members joined the union. Afternoon tea was served and a very profitable afternoon closed with the Benediction. BAND OF HOPE. The monthly meeting of the Band of Hope was held in St. Paul’s schoolroom, Wednesday evening. The Rev. J. Richards presided. Temperance hymns were sung. A very helpful address was given by Pastor Allan Smith and the following programme was much enjoyed: Recitation, Selwyn l\ih‘v; solo, David Kernsley; recitation, Ina Holmes; pianoforte solo, June Skcllem; recitation, Joyce Martin; solo, Mrs Holmes; action song by boys, .and girls, “John and Co.” Dialogue, “The Human Body.” Madam Hart, Marjorie Carter; Mr Brain, Douglas Cummack; Miss- Lungs, Joyce Martin; Master Nerves, Sim Richards: Master Muscles, Allan ‘Carter; Digestive Organs, Ron Foster. i DANCING IN LONDON. For all the depression and the economy campaign, there has been no falling off in the. popularity of dancing in Lrtndon. “It,plays a far more im-, portant part in-social life than it does out here,” said a London dancingteacher, newly arrived in Melbourne, '-“and many doctors are prescribing- it as a recreation and exercise for their patients. Indeed, in many instances they are working in close co-opcration with dancing teachers. And special championships are arranged for 'dancers over 40’.” Old-time dancing has lately gained quite a hold in England, not in sophisticated London, but in the provincial towns, Manchester, Leicester, and especially Liverpool. There the dance palais have one night a week for oldtime dancing, and invariably the ballTooni is packed to the doors. “Ninety per cent of the dancers are middleaged,” the dancing teacher said, “and If any bright young things intrude ■with modern dances they arc promptly .-liown the door.” AN ENGAGEMENT. "The engagement is announced of Margaret Ann (Marge), only daughter -of the late Mr and Mrs Owen Cummins, Ramarama, to Frank, fourth son of Mr and Mrs Norman Edge, Cambridge.
