BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING- OF COUNCIL. LAST OF THE PERIOD. The last meeting of the present constituted council prior to the municipal elections was held in the Council Chambers last evening, when there were present, the Mayor (Mr C. H. Priestley), Cis. H. Alan Bell, T. A. Kelly, T. F, Richards, W. Moore, A. Wilkinson, Geo. Calvert and M. Wells. The clerk (Mr F. T. Ray) and engineer (Mr T. Dix) wore also in attendance. Anzac Nijht Pictures. The council granted the local Returned Soldiers’ Association permission to screen a suitable programme of pictures at the Town Hall on the evening of Anzac Day, the funds being for the relief of distress. Saleyards Repairs. The chairman, Waikato Branch of the Auckland Stock Auctioneers’ Association, wrote re the condition of the local saleyards and said an inspection disclosed they were not in very bad order. Minor repairs would be attended to. A portion of the yards on the western side used during the dairy season required attention, but it was thought advisable to defer this until the dairy season starts in May or June. The Mayor said he had discussed the matter with one of the companies’ representatives and he was hopeful that 0 in the near future the companies would contribute to the employment of several unemployed men. He had suggested that the companies provide the necessary timber. It was agreed that a reply bo held over until the Mayor had again met a representative of the auctioneers. Picture Advertising Boards. The manager of the local picture theatre, in reply to the council, submitted a number of reasons for using display boards in several parts of the town. It was agreed that the manager be again informed that the council is opposed to the display of such boards. Work for Unemployed. The Chamber of Commerce wrote the council regarding the proposed new Karapiro Bridge and urged that the work of building the approaches be put in hand at once. It would be very useful work for the unemployed during the winter months. The Mayor . reported recent interviews with departmental engineers and said the matter was being gone on with. It was not easy to hurry the Government. The letter was received. General. The Chamber of Commerce wrote drawing the council’s attention to the need for repairs to the footpath from Mr McCombic’s garage to Bryce Street,^ The chamber further requestecTthat the portion of Victoria Street from the Bank of New South Wales to the Victoria Square gates be better lighted. The communications were received. The secretary, District High School Committee, wrote asking that the traffic signs at the corner of Clare Street and Victoria Road bo placed in more suitable positions'. A tenant wrote asking if the council would reduce weekly rent on a section in Williams Street from 2/- to 1/6. — Left to the Mayor and town clerk to inspect and report. Cr Moore asked for attention to a wash-out at the foot of Queen and Hall Streets, also the removing back of a grating at McLean Street corner. —To be attended to. The Mayor advised that the Misses Brann and Priestley had in hand the customary sale of poppies on Friday (to-morrow). Cr Wells again drew attention to the slate of the footpath from Mr Seth Webb’s stables in Empire Street around the Central Hotel to the F.A.C. premises.—To be attended to. Cr Wells further asked if the council would be prepared to kerb and channel a portion of Hamilton Road on the southern sido from Mr Sayers’ residence to Mr Boston Couper’s. The Mayor said he did not think the council could entertain such requests at tlio present time. There was also the policy of continuity to be considered. Of course, if the ratepayers were prepared to share the expense the council might consider the matter. End of the Term. Before closing the meeting the Mayor briefly referred to it being the last of the term. He extended hearty thanks to the council for its loyal support and also to the whole of the borough staff. He thought the Government might take a leaf out of the council’s book in its reduction policy. The Legislative Council could well bo reduced. He hoped the clouds of depression would havo lifted cro another two years had gone by.

Cr Wells, deputy-mayor, returned thanks for the councillors, and paid tribute to tho service and intense interest, of the Mayor during his long association with the council and with Cambridge.
