AROUND THE BOROUGH
WORKS AND MAINTENANCE. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report was presented by the engineer (Mr T. Dix) to the monthly meeting of the Borough Council hist evening:— Maintenance: The usual routine work in connection with the general maintenance of the borough has been attended to on all streets that required attention. The grader has been out on differcne occasions rounding up several roads throughout the town. A large amount of patching with gravel has been carried out on several of the roads about the town that wove getting in a bad state. Duke Street hill and Gorton Road are being kept in very good order by the Matamata County Council. A good deal of earth and lubbish lying about the town has been cleaned up and deposited in tho Council's section on Thornton Road. Street cleaning is being attende I to as usual and the streets kept in a, clean condition. Reserves: The gardens and lawns around the Jubilee Gardens and Town Hull arc being kept in very good order. Baths: A fair amount of work has been done in connection with preparing the bath for the season, ami a:, the piesent time is all ready for filling when necessary. Hautapu Cemetery: The Sexton at the cemetery continues to keep the paths clean and tidy and to-day the whole place is in a very satisfactory condition. Unemployment: A gang of unemployed men have been engaged on different works throughout the town and have done some very good work. The chief work is the kcrbing and channelling in Queen Street which is progressing satisfactorily. The sides have also been taken off several streets in the borough to allow the water to run into the water tables off the road. Gasworks: The whole of the plant at {lie works is in good order and has not given any trouble of a serious nature during the month. At the present time I am making an inspection of all gas appliances in use throughout the services and the result has been very interesting. At nearly every place called on some adjustment was needed to the appliances or service pipes. I feel sure that when the inspection is completed all the appliances in use will be giving satisfaction. The amount of gas manufactured at the works during the month of October 1931 was 677,000 cubic feet; coal carbonised 47 tons; average make per ton of coal, 14,500 feet. Waterworks: The general maintenance of the existing systems is being maintained in good order and have not given any trouble during the month. All fire plugs and valves throughout the scheme arc in good order. • Sanitation: The sewerage scheme of the borough appears to be working satisfactorily and has not given any trouble during the month. The outlet pipe to the river from the septic tank in Duke Street got choked with willow roots and gave us a lot of trouble to remove them. This has all been repaired and to-day the septic tanks are all in good order. Victoria Square: Now that the camping season is approaching I would like to suggest to the committee that a light be placed in the cooking .shed. I have enquired about the cost of installing this and the running of same. The cost to ii!s<al would be £2; community or street lighting, 5/- per month. The season for tarring any new work is at hand and the Leamington Town Board are ready to have the extra 10 chains tarred at Leamington, on the Te Awamutu highway. I should like authority to purchase the necessary tar namely. 1000 gallons; estimated cost, £SO. In a supplementary report the engineer submitted estimates of his requirements for November amounting to £ll3 16/2.
