THE TOWN CLOCK

RE-ERECTION AGAIN DISCUSSED.^ RAISING THE FUNDS. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council, last night, Cr M. Wells asked if anything further had been done about the re-erection of the town clock. He knew that other local bodies had received correspondence on the subject in October and in November on the, cost of .pulling down the tower and the clock, and the department's reasons for definitely declining to pay anything for re-erection. The. town clerk said he had received no communications since the last meeting. , The Mayor (Mr C. H. Priestley) said lie did not think there was any chance of. gvtting anything from the department. However, he felt confident that id a new tower was" of a memorial ua--9 Tine to pioneers and old settlers, people . would gladly subscribe. "I have written privately and I don't think we have a hope of getting any assistance from the Government," said Mr Priestley. Cr W. Moore: I think we should take some definite steps before the elections. Cr T. H. Kelly: There is more weight on the post office tower than ever before. d Cr Wells: We have just been made a laughing stock by the department in that after telling us of the danger from the top portion of the tower and the clock and bells, they have erected parapets and ornamental features that were previously considered by the department to be highly dangerous. Cr C. Boycc: We should have a special meeting of the council and take some definite action for the raising of funds; also to get a final reply from the Government as to whether it i 3 prepared to contribute anything. Finally it was agreed that the special committee meet at an early date to fully discuss the matter, to approach the Government for assistance, to recommend a suitable site, to call for competitive designs and take other preliminary steps for the erection of the tower and clock.
