CAMBRIDGE BUILDING

IMPROVEMENT IN HCKJRES. PROGRESS IN TOWN AREA. The year just past has-seen-the borough progress to a 'vory noticeable extent with the erection of new structures in the business area, and likewise .in • the residential section. As the figures show there was a considerable rise in the amount of building complet-, ed in 1930 compared with that of 1929 —the leanest period that had been experienced for many years. In Victoria Street two new blocks of; buildings were erected in concrete for Messrs E. J. Easter and C. Waghorne and Mr P. S- Veale, totalling an estimated value cf £3626. In the former block there Sjre two shops ■ and in the latter just i recently completed three shops .are situated. All replaced wooden structures destroyed by fire, and are a decided improvement to the shopping .area. The new Masonic Hall on the corner of Queen and Briee Streets is also an imposing building, as will be the new church now nearing completion ~Spr the. Plymouth Brethren. ***f. Several dwelling places havo aiso "fiocn put up to the order of private --people, while additions and -outbuildings have featured largely in the year's work. -■-...; Cambridge is indeed progressing in the field of building operations. One need only look round the borough and compare it with conditions.a few years ago, to appreciate the progress made. Despite the financial depression that was commencing towards the end of the year .a noticeable rise was seen in the number, of permits issued during that period. The following figures will speak for themselves: The total estimated value of all buildings erected during the year was £14,074 17/-, representing 51 permits •issued. November saw . the greatest amount of building of any month, during which period eight permits were issued at a value of £3353. The monthly returns were:— « ' £ s. d.
