NEW CHESS CHAMPION.
A. W. GILES WINS TITLE AT ROTORUA. (By Telegraph —fress Association). BOTORUA, Monday. The New Zealand chess championship was won to-day by A. W. Gyles, after playing-off with A. 'E. Erski'ne, with whom he had tied in the final round. This was Gyles' fourth play-off as the result of tics in the course of the com : petition. He has previously been nine times runner-up in the championship, but has never won the title before. The the players at the end of the final round were:—Erskinc, 8 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss, 9. points; Gyles, 9,0, 2,9; Sevcrne, G, 4,1, 8; Greenfield, 7,0, 4,7; Rolling, 7,0, 4,7; Maddox,\ 5,4, 2,7; Grierson, 4,2, 5,5; Pleasants, 3,2, 6,4; Miller, 3,1, 7,3 J; Fairburn, 3,0, 8,3; Kicz Kununo,r 2, I,' 8, Zif.
