MISSIONS IN INDIA
OUTCOME OF ROUND TABLE CONFERENCE', On Thursday evening a Missionary gathering was held in connection with the Christian Convention in the Peace MemoriarHall when there was a large attendance \of Convention members and local people interested. Several speakers connected with missionary enterprise delivered most interesting and instructive addresses giving an insight into the work that is being carried out among the heathen peoples of the world. Mr George Wilson, Deputation Secretary for the Ceylon and India General Mission, was the principal speaker of the evening. Mr Wilson gave a general outline of the work being done by his mission in India, during the course of -which he stated that when the mission was first Commenced the Gospel was not well received and only very few' conversions t ook place. However as the years went by, and more natives -were interested in the work, the mission thrived 1 until there are now 40 missionaries at work assisted by some 150 Indian helpers. Round Table Conference.Referring to the Indian Round Table Conference that -is at present being held in London, Mr Wilson said that owing to the many castes existing among the Hindus it was quite impossible for Britain to give them total independence. However what they would probably receive would be a measure of self-government for each Province. The British Government had done wonders for the good of the people, but if their works were to bear . fruit in future years, Britain must continue to have
paramount power. Mr Roderick Gillanders and others spoke on the work being carried out in other parts. Each address showed that progress was being made in bringing the natives round to the Christian life. It was pointed out\ that the amount of work to be accomplished was tremendous, and called for the help, either materially or spiritually, of all Christian folk.
