PRIZE JERSEY CATTLE.
NEW BLOOD FOB DOMINION. The consignment of 15 Jersey cattle, which was brought to Auckland from New York by the steamer Ashburton on October 28, was released, from quarantine on Motuihi Island on Monday and conveyed by a ferry steamer to the city. The cattle were later sent by rail to Hamilton, and will be offered at auction at Claudelands. The shipment is claimed to be the most valuable one brought to the Dominion, comprising one of the finest groups of cattle seen here. The cattle, which originally were sent from Jersey Island to the United States, were consigned by the American importers, Messrs T. S. Cooper and Sons, to Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd. who make an annual shipment. They were selected on Jersey Island early in the year by Mr T. S. Cooper, junr., of the United States, Mr J. A. Perree, of Jersey Island, and Mr H. P. Too.se, of New Zealand. After over a month’s careful inspection 15 head were chosen. They were pastured for six months in the United States before being shipped to New Zealand, and in the meantime four calves were born. Ten of the cattle, which wore of an age to exhibit when on the island, have won between them some 40 prizes. The animals are of ' an excellent type, and are bred from the best strains. The New Zealand regulations for the importation of cattle provide for a poiiod of quarantine, at the end of which time the cattle are examined by the Agricultural Department before being landed. ,
