FIRE DISTRICT POLL.
In view of the importance of the proposal placed before the Cambridge ratepayers yesterday, when a poll was taken on a proposal to declare the Cambridge Borough to be a Fire Board District under the “Fire Brigades A.ct, 1926,” the exceedingly small poll—only one hundred votes recorded —was most disappointing, and indicated deplorable lack of interest in affairs of vital importance to the welfare of the ber; ough. However, the poll has been carried, and those who failed to record their votes will have no one but themselves to blame should they at any future date find the consequences not to their liking. The creation of a fire district in Cambridge is a decided step forward as regards fire fighting. Our Fire Brigade has all through worked hard under a distinct handicap as regards equipment. To bring the firelighting appliances and organisation to a standard that will meet the requirements of the proposed Fire Board will certainly entail considerable expenditure. However, if this results in greater immunity from the disastrous results of fires it will be worth the expense. Moreover, the cost will, ..in future, be shared by the Underwriters’ Association and the Government. Provided •the required standard of efficiency in fire-fighting can be secured at a reasonable cost, the formation of a Fire District should undoubtedly prove of great value to the town., and ultimately result not only in a greater sense of security against fire, but also in a considerable reduction in the heavy charges r.ow made for fire insurance coverage.
