CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce has had a somewhat chequered career. Occasionally new life is infused into it, and for a time the meetings are interesting and excellent work is done; but after a time the enthusiasm seems to wane, and the Chamber is quiescent. This is a great pity, for the Chamber of Commerce, if used wisely, should be a power for good in the town, and serve the best interests of ooth Town and country. We are not prepared to lay the blame on anyone’s shoulders—doubtless there are many contributing factors to this regrettable state of affairs —but all will agree that it is not to the credit of the citizens of the town that our Chamber should be so poorly supported or so inactive.' However, whatever the past may be, there is always hope for the future. The annual meeting of the local Chamber will be held on Thursday evening next. Here is an opportunity for a new start, and we trust that local business people will seize this and set to work to make this organisation a real live factor in the promotion of the public weal. There aTc a great many important matters in which the Chamber of Commerce can lend a helping haripl, r--A.ll sorts of prob lems are to be met &ith in municipal

and district enterprise, while the members of the Chamber can co-operate with local bodies, assist deserving forward movements, and help materially in the conduct of business affairs in the town. The main difficulty in the past lias been to find people with sufficient public spirit and energy to maintain a live interest in the Chamber. This needs a little self-sacrifice, but every citizen, and business men in particular, has responsibilities in this direction, and we would appeal to all to do their

part, no matter how small, to infuse now life into the Chamber and help to maintain and extend its usefulness.
