UP THE WAIKATO

TRIP IN A CANOE. AUCKLAND MAN’S JOURNEY. A visit .was paid to this office this morning by Mr Stanley Rose, of Auckland, who set out from Northcotc in his canoe, “The Wanderer,’’ to travel up the Waikato River and on down the Wanganui to the coast. Mr Rose after leaving Northcote went down the Tamaki River to Sylvia Park, thence across to Otahuhu and down Cortege Road (that used in the days of the Maori Wars) to the Manukau Harbour. From here Waiuku was traversed until the Waikato River was met. The remainder of the journey to Cambridge was made by water.

Mr Rose carries full camping equipment, and pitches his tent wherever night overtakes him. A light pair of wheels are carried by which means the canoe is transported over land when the occasion demands. It is the traveller’s intention to continue on to Taupo and across country until he meets the upper reaches of the Wanganui River. He will probably leave Cambridge some time in the early afternoon to-day. Mr Rose is out on purely a pleasure trip, and hopes that “The Wanderer” may register many hundred miles before it arrives home again.
