“ENGLAND EXPECTS”
How many people know that Nelson's famous message at Trafalgar was originally dictated by him as "England confides that every man will do his duty?" The explanation of what occurred is reprinted in the Daily Mail from the records of Mr Pascoe, who acted as signal officer of the Victory. At a quarter to noon Mr Pascoc was ordered to make several signals, among them the famous message, and to be quick, as "close action" was to follow. Mr Pascoc suggested that, as "eonfides '' would have to be spelt by letter, "expects," which could be given in one signal, should be substituted. Lord Nelson agreed, and so the change was made. It was necessary in order to meet the demands of the new signal book, which had only recently made its appearance .in the navy.
Mr Pascoc was the father of Captain Pascoe, <£v.N., who was for some time a police magistrate in Victoria.
