THE SHOW

LOCAL ANNUAL FIXTURE. J RECORD ENTRIES. Now that the entries for the princi- } pal sections of the forthcoming annual .'TJ fixture have closed it is possible to get an idea of the prospects of success this year. It is most gratifying that again this year we are able to state that the entries indicate continued interest' in the fixture, and it is assured that when the entries , for the children's pony classes, school work and floriculture ar« in, the total will easily be a record.' Review of the Entries. The total entries for the principal sections already received is 968 as. against 966 for the previous show. The outstanding feature of the entries for the forthcoming fixture is the splendid response to the cattle sections, the total for this department being 290 as compared with 195 for last year's show. This is particularly gratifying and assures that one of the best displays of cattle for many years will be exhibited this year. In the cattle sections the. most striking feature is the big increase in the entries of the Milking Shorthorn section with a total of 84, against 21 last year. Again this year the Jersey' entries should provide a very fine section with a total of 97 entries against 73 last year. The Friesians are also to be well represented with 60 entries as compared with 56 last year, while the same applies to the Ayrshires with 50 against 45. ; Al* A ' though imuch more might be done in this direction it is, encouraging* that the v sheep section has brought forward.3o - entries this year, there being no.competition last year. It is to be regretted that there will be no pig section at the coming show, the entries being very disappointing last year. In view of the rapid growth of the motor these days it is satisfactory that the support in the horse department is fairly well maintained. This year 246 entries have been . received for the hacks, hunters and harness horse de- . partments as against 256 last year. Al-.. though there is a very small decrease, the support to the local show is better . than that given to most counry fixtures. In the draught horse section 31 entries have been received against 30 for 1929.

It is not to be wondered at that the entries in the home industry section is clown somewhat for the season has been a. very trying one for the production of fruit and vegetables, there being so much blight as compared with former years. So far a total of 370 entries in the home industries department has been received against 471 lost year. However, there is quite a large number yet to come in, and when show day arrives it will be found that the display will bo a good one, considering the handicaps referred to. Of late weeks the show executive, especially the energetic secretary, Mr Edgar James, have been hard at work preparing for the show on March sth and 6th, and ,the management promises to be better than ever this year. Certain it is that if the show is not an a**round success, it will not be for any want in preparation. The catalogues for the fixture are now being printed by the Independent printery, and will be available in a few days' time. On Thursday next, as advertised, a working bee will be held at the showgrounds, and the committee and all willing workers are requested to be on the grounds at 10 a.m.
