1 . MONTHLY MEETING. ;S ;* • (GENERAL BUSINESS. r , The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr C. H. Priestley), Crs W. G. Care, Chas. Boyce, H. Alan Bell, W. Moore and M. Wells. The clerk (Mr F. B. Watters) and engineer (Mr T. Dix) were also in attendance. Cr E. C. Wallis was granted leave of absence. • I Borough Ranger and Pound. The clerk, Matamata County Council, replied to the council confirming an arrangement in connection with the "borough pound and the contribution of £ls towards the ranger's salary for the year 1930-31. It was considered that the ranger should not work beyond the Maungatautari No. 2 School/ in view of the provision of the Impounding Act that cattle should be impounded in the nearest pound. Tbje ' arrangement was considered quite satisfactory and the letter was received. Grouping for Traffic Inspection. The Waikato County clerk forwardod copy of a report of the proceedings In connection with the conference on group traffic inspection. The appointment of a chief inspector and three assistants for the group would entail an expenditure of £I3OO, and with benzine, etc., £I7OO. This would be met an a 50-50 basis with the Highways Board. The council's share wPuld be £25 per annum (three per cent). It was hoped to have the scheme in operation by April 1. The Mayor moved that the clerk write advising that the council has its own inspector and that it did not deem It necessary to be associated with the group. This was seconded by Cr Care and carried. Conferences. The council was advised that the 22nd conference of the Municipal Association would be • held- at Invercar--gill on March 5, also the annual conference of Town Clerks on March_4. On the motion, of Crs Bell and Wells it was resolved that the Mayor and \ town clerk attend the respective conferences. . ... , ~;■• • • ) Vjr Boyce asked, as relative to remits, to the Municipal Conference, if the, council received any funds from traffic

licenses. The clerk said the council only received the revenue from drivers' licenses, though, of course, it got a sinaii portion from the traffic pool. Cr Boyce said he thought tl»«* council should, at least, get a share of traffic licenses of commercial vehicle^. The Mayor said, there was 4 remit on the subject to go before the conference. Landing Site. Messrs A. E. Hill and W. R. Edwards wrote asking the council's permission to make a landing site near wharf for their motor launch. The Mayor pointed out that, the river banks and shores were under the control of the Marine Department. The council would raise no objection to the landing being made. Noxious Weeds. Arising out of the confirmation of Mr F. H. Green as noxious weeds inspector, Cr Moore brought up the state of the section at the bottom of Duke Street. It was covered with ragwort. The council should see that the borough is kept clean and should take stg>'ps to enforce it. v The Mayor stated that the owner of the section had been notified to have the section cleared/ within 14 days, and in default the council would do the work and charge the expense against the owner. Cr Wells also brought up the matter of the railway section at «the east end of Queen Street; also two other sections in the borough. 1 The Mayor said the inspector had been round the borough. It was agreed that Cr Moore seo the inspector about the sections referred to." General. The secretary, Municipal Band, wrote on behalf of the committee, expressing appreciation of ex-Cr Glanville's services while Borough Council representative on the Band Committee. The Mayor said it would be necessary to appoint another representative on the Band Committee, but no appointment was actually made. The local manager, Bank of New Zealand, advised that the rate of interest on overdrafts had been increased from 64 to 7 per cent— Received. Leases Renewed. The council confirmed the renewal of borough leases to ■J. F. Cleary, F. A. GrlJbs, C. A. Roberts, Seth Webb, Misses Brooks, S. Lewis and Munroe Motors, Ltd. Abattoir Report. The abattoir manager reported for

the month of January as follows: Stock slaughtered: Cows, 5.1; bullocks, 49; calves, 5; sheep and lambs, 60; pigs 42. Slaughtering foes totalled £ll4 16/10. Animals condemned: One pig wholly and three partially.
