MOTORING NOTES

MOTOR CYCLES. NEW SEASON'S MODELS. An enviable reputation Las been earned by the B.S.A. motor cycles i'or reliability and quiet running, and the manufacturers have reaped the reward of their thoughtful policy in the everincreasing popularity of their products. It is popularity of this kind that brings with it responsibilities, but the B.S.A. programme for 1920 provides ample evidence that these responsibilities have been shouldered with due regard to the maintenance of the firm's high reputation. Perhaps the most outstanding departure from the normal practice in the 1930 models is the adoption of the forged steel backbone on certain models. This forging combines the steering head, top tube, and seat pillar lug which undoubtedly means .a step in the right direction. Developments in the lightweight four stroke line and the use of chromium plating on the De Luxe models are further features of importance, while the adoption of the standardised arrangements of ignition and carburreter controls, arc in the nature of an experiment. There will, however, be no inverted lever controls on the 1930 B.S.A. machines. A big change has taken place in the ( 250 c.c. classes, and it may be said that the 1929 side valve machine of 240 c.c. has disappeared in favour of two entirely new models of the same capacity Throughout most of the new season J s models have many new refinements which will keep B.S.A. well before the motor cycliaag world. Mr D. L. Hastie, our local B.S.A. agent, has just imported a new line of B.S.A.*s and an inspection will convince enthusiasts that the B.S.A. range caters for every class, and although no epochmaking changes have been listed, there arc pi-actical and valuable improvcni«sifts all along the line. ;
