CAMBRIDGE POUND
PROVISION OF MAINTENANCE. COUNTY COUNCIL CANNOT ASSIST. At the monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council yesterday a letter was received from the town clerk, Cambridge Borough Council, advising that a new poundkeeper had been appointed owing to the death of the late J. Norries, and the county council was asked if it was prepared to assist financially in maintaining the pound. It was pointed out that a fair sum had to be spent in renovating the house at the pound, which was provided rent free. It cost the council approximately £IOO per annum to maintain the pound and pay the poundkeeper and his telephone rates. The pound being almost exclusively used by the counties, the borough council considered it should not have to pay more than half the maintenance. Cr Cox: The borough council gets the fees and they should pay for the maintenance. In Teply to Cr Bruce the chairman said the council’s ranger used the Cambridge pound for cattle from the bottom end of Horahora and Maungatautari districts. The chairman said he felt sure the council’s ranger had sought the assistance of the poundkeeper at times. The Engineer: It would help if the borough council could give returns of stock impounded at Cambridge from the county. The clerk stated that at one period the council had contributed in connection with special circumstances, but it had been made clear at the time that the payment was not to be regarded as a precedent, and that the council did not recognise any liability in the maintenance of the pound.
On the motion of the chairman it was resolved to advise the borough coucil that the council has no powers to provide for contributions to the maintenance of the pound.
