HAMILTON THEATRES

ANOTHER TO BE BUILT. USE OF TOWN HALL, . At the meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council on Wednesday night a discussion ensured Te the leasing of the Hamilton Town Hall for talking pictures. Recently offers were made by Williamson’s Films, Ltd., and also by Mr F. H. Billing, Te Aroha, for the use of the hall, and the matter was referred to a committee of the council, who recommended that the hall be leased to Williamson’s Ltd., subject to special conditions, for a period of nine months, with right of renewal for a further, three months, at the rate of £lO per week. Trek to Cambridge, During the discussion Cr Cobbe said:' ‘‘ At present we aTe driving people out of Hamilton and I for one would like to see this nightly exodus to Cambridge stop. If we had a tip-top local theatre here nobody would leave the town and therefore I think wo should -sign up this agreement.” He added that the effect of hundreds of Hamiltonians going daily to Cambridge must be detrimental to business and trade generally in Hamilton.

New Theatre. It is freely reported in Hamilton that Williamson’s, Ltd., intend erecting a new up-to-date theatre' in Hamilton at an early date. Questioned on the matter by a Waikato Times representative, the managing director and secretary of the company stated that the company * would, sooner or later, erect a modern structure worthy of the town. It would ( be much on,the same lines as the Regent Theatre, in Auckland. The question of site was the present stumbling block, and though many were under consideration no definite decision had as yet been accepted. The new theatre would assure ample accommodation for big touring companies, and the best talkie equipment 1 available would be installed.
