WAIKATO SHOW

NEXT WEEK’S EVENT. SPLENDID ENTRIES. It is pleasing to know that the entries. for the Waikato A. and P. -Show, to be held at the Claudelands showgrounds on Wednesday and Thursday of next week, 13th and 14th insts., have come in splendidly. There are a few classes in which the entry is not large, but' others arc so excellent that* taken all Tound, a magnificent show is assured, and we may safely look forward to the show being one of the best ever held in' the district. Sheep Classes. The increased interest taken in sheep in the Waikato is shown by the very large entry in classes for sheep and lambs. ’ An innovation at the forthcoming show are classes for groups of fat lambs. Four districts are provided for, and each district was restricted to a maximum of eight entries, no owner to have the .right of more than one entry. The eight entries in each district have been filled, each entry comprising a group of five fat lambs. The prize for this section is a handsome one of twenty guineas, donated by the fat lamb buyers .in the Waikato. This class is creating exceptional interest. The are no less than 420 entries in the various sheep classe's, and 170 in the classes for lambs—figures which speak for themselves. Many Lamb Entries. Many of the classes for lambs have filled splendidly. In one class of a group of three lambs no less than forty entries have been received. In the class for three Southdown lambs, suitable for freezing, 37 entries have come along, and other classes for lambs have filled well. Jerseys and Ayrshires. In the cattle classes Jerseys and Ayrshires seem to be growing in popularity. In both of these breeds there are very largo entries, and a magnificent display of these breeds may be looked for. Another innovation in the Jersey section are classes for pedigree cow and yearling heifer respectively for exhibitors who have never won a prize at any A. and P. Show for pedigree Jersey cattle. That this provision is justified is proved by the fact that ten entries have been received in class for cows, and thirteen for yearlings. Other Classes. In nearly every other class the entries are good. Horses are not so numerous as in the past, which is only to be expected, while it is regretted that the glasses for horticulture and school work ghow a slight falling off. The industrial section will be a good one again. Exc&Hent entries have come to hand for thp v&tious ring events, for which attractive prices are offered, and there will be some very fine competitions again this year, when -the best horses and competitors in the , province will again be trying conclusions. There is every indication of next week’s show being another brilliant success.
