BOXING

PURDY BEATS FAIRHALL. By Telegraph—Press Association — WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. Charlie Purdy, the Auckland boxer, last evening gained a meritorious decision on points over Tommy Fairhall, the Australian, who is light-weight champion of the British Empire. Although strained and nervous at the commencement of the contest, the New Zealandcr was never seriously troubled. Fairhall punched hard with both hands and tried hard for a knock-out, but Purdy both outboxed and outfought his opponent. It was a hard, clean fight throughout.
