LAWN TENNIS

THE CAMBRIDGE CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Cambridge Tennis Club was held on Wednesday night. In the absence of the president (Mr F. Penn), Mr F. Sway no (vice-pre-sident) occupied the chair and there were about 20 members present. Report and Balance Sheet. The report and balance sheet submitted by the secretary were adopted. Annual Report. The president (Mr Penn) presented a report, in which ho referred to the club’s enterprise in putting down five Lay kohl courts, at a cost of approximately £350, an average of £7O per court. To enable this to be done, a substantial bank overdraft had been secured, and thanks were expressed to those gentlemen who had signed the “joint and several” guarantee for same. The club had saved a considerable amount by putting down the new courts by day labour, instead of by contract.

The club membership stood at 78. Reference was made to the fact that several who had used the club’s courts had failed to meet their financial responsibilities, and the president suggested that steps should be taken to prevent a recurrence of such unsportsmanlike behaviour in the future. Financially, the club had done wonderfully well to have put down five courts at such heavy expenditure, and to have an overdraft of only £169 13s 2d.

During the season six matches had been played with outside clubs, and of these Cambridge had won three two against Ngaruawahia and one against Matamata—and lost three—Hamilton two, Te Arolia one. Reference was made to the fine effort of the ladies of the club, assisted by a few others, in holding a refreshment booth at the Easter tennis tourney, when a -substantial sum was raised for the club’s funds. N

The president exercised his personal thanks to the executive for their valued services during the year, and an appeal to club members to show more loyalty to, and eo-operation with, the management committee* Reference was made to the great amount of work done by the lion, secretary (Mr F. Entwisle) and a special w-ord of thanks was due to Mrs, W. J. Ward for the use of her homo for meetings, etc., and for many acts of kindness in the interests of the club.

The balance sheet showed that the year had commenced with a credit balance of £B4 12s sd, and ended with a debit balance of £I6S 13s 2d. This was considered highly satisfactory in view of the expenditure of £350 on new courts. Election of Officers. President, Mr F. Penn (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs F. Sway no, It. Morrison, J. C. Allen, and J. T. Entwislo; secretary and treasurer, Mr F. Entwisle (re-elected); management ■committee, Mrs Clayton, Misses M. Armstrong, I. Garland, Messrs R. Morrison, I. James, J. Cox; ground superintendent, Mr R. Morrison; club captain, Mr F. Swayne; delegates to sub-asso-ciation, Messrs R. Morrison and I. James; auditor, Mr H, Rowland. Selectors. It was resolved that there be three selectors, two A grade and one B grade representatives. Messrs R. Morrison, F. Swayne and T. H. Ross were elected as delegates. Subscriptions. It was resolved that the annual subscription be the same as last year, viz., Men £2, reducible to £1 10s; ladies £l, reducible to 15s if paid before the 30th November; juniors under 16 years ss. The subscription of £1 for those under 18 existing last year was not included this year. Domain Board Complaint.

A letter was received from the Domain Board which complained of the untidy state in which the club’s portion of the Domain was kept. The matter was much discussed, and it was thought that in view of the large amount of now work done during the season, and the fact that two of the courts had to be left without a Laykold surface for want of funds, the board’s letter was a little severe.

It' was resolved that a delegation consisting of Messrs F. Penn, F. Efitwisle'and F, Swayne be appointed to meet the Domain Board and fully discuss the position, and that no more money be spent on courts until a do finite understanding is arrived at with the Domain Board.

The matter of the incorporation of the club was mentioned, but it was decided to let the matter staivl over to a general meeting to be called on the opening day of the club. Thanks. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the secretary (Mr F. Entwisle), also the outgoing committee for their services during the past year. Thanks were also extended to Mr P. J. Turney for the donation of a racquet for the club championship, and to other donors of trophies.
